New Cosco ship calls at Antwerp
Chinese shipping company, Cosco’s latest container carrier, the Cosco Belgium, has moored in the Port of Antwerp – the 55th ultra large container ship to call at the port.
The vessel, which has a capacity of 13,350 teu, is a new record for the state owned Chinese company.
The deepening of the river Scheldt allows the port to receive ships with a draught of up to 16m travelling upstream.
Luc Arnouts, chief commercial officer, Antwerp Port Authority, said: “The port of Antwerp lies in the heart of Europe, and thanks to its location deep inland it is able to serve European consumers in a quick, efficient and sustainable way. Goods bound for Antwerp are carried 80km inland up the river, which among other things results in significant time savings.”
The Cosco Belgium will call regularly at Antwerp Gateway in the Deurganckdok as part of its NE3 service from the Far East to Europe.
