Palfinger jack-up-rig upgrade
Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen has completed a major upgrade of Keppel Fels ‘N’ Class drilling rig thirty days early, largely due to the support lent by Palfingers JUMP system.
The scope of the work to the Rowan Viking, one of the largest drilling rigs in the North Sea, included the extension of its three legs by 10m up to 180m, a five year periodic survey and getting the rig up to standard for the Acknowledgement of Compliance certification (AoC) required by the Norwegian authorities.
During the project, Palfinger Systems used its unique jack-up maintenance platform (JUMP) to complete the job saving both time and money. JUMP also provides a safer working environment for workmen because it negates the need for scaffolding towers.
The JUMP system is a flexible unit which provides access to jack-up platform legs at any height. It has IP supply platforms that allow workmen to move up and down the legs at heights of up to 160m to complete both fitting and welding jobs. It has enough capacity for both workmen and materials and also provides sufficient power supply for power tools.
