The firm of P&A Campbell originated on the Clyde and then moved to the Bristol Channel in the 1960s. From its inception P&A Campbell dominated steamer travel on the Bristol Channel, both for tourism and for trade between Bristol and South Wales. From the Hotwells Basin to the ports of Cardiff, Penarth and Barry, the steamers of Campbell’s were a regular sight as they made their way down to the north Devon coast, Lundy Island and Somerset piers.
This definitive history tells the story of the inauguration of the company’s steamers on the Sussex coast, the battles with the Railway Company’s Red Funnel steamers, both on the Bristol Channel and in the law courts, and of the White Funnel Fleet’s finest era – the golden years before the First World War.
