‘Pieter Schelte’ name change
Allseas Group, vessel operator of the ‘Pieter Schelte’ has confirmed to Maritime Journal it will be renaming the vessel following widespread protest.
The 328m Pieter Schelte was originally named in honour of Pieter Schelte Heerema, the Dutch father of Edward Heerama, founder and president of Allseas.
But just recently, it has drawn criticism from Jewish groups in both the Netherlands and the UK who have said it serves as a grim reminder of Schelte Heerema’s role as an officer in the Waffen SS and his subsequent war crimes conviction.
The ship, which will now be renamed Pioneering Spirit, is well known for being instrumental in pioneering oil exploration in the North Sea.
It will also be used in the dismantling of Royal Dutch Shell’s Brent Delta platform.
