Port of Genoa crash
The Italian press has reported four dead and several people missing after a container ship crashed into the control tower at the Port of Genoa late last night.
Italian press agency LaPresse says that at least half a dozen people are still unaccounted for after the Jolly Nero, of the Italian shipping line, Ignazio Messina & Co, ploughed into the control tower whilst staff in the tower were undergoing a shift change.
Some staff were reportedly trapped in a lift in the tower following the incident and as many as 14 people were trapped inside.
Maritime Journal approached the Port of Genoa this morning and is awaiting comment on the current situation. But it’s understood that the rescue operation is in full swing.
Pictures on ItalianTV this morning showed the control tower leaning precariously surrounded by rubble. It later collapsed leaving nothing but a metal stairwell behind.
No-one knows how the incident happened yet, but there is speculation in the media that the ship lost control due to engine failure.
Jolly Nero is 240m long and weighs in at around 40,000 tonnes.
