Pulp fact for Zeeland
An official ceremony attended by 1,200 guests and the president of Brazil on 12-12-12 saw the opening of the largest cellulose factory in the world and increased activity for Zeeland Seaports in the Netherlands.
Much of the factory’s annual capacity of 1.5m tons will be carried from Brazil to the Scaldiahaven in Vlissingen, furthering the lead of Zeeland Seaports as a west-European transhipment hub for forest products.
Arriving cellulose will initially be stored at Vlissingen then supplied to the paper and tissue industry in the hinterland. An increasingly important share of the onward transport will take place using inland vessels. As a result, Vlissingen will see not only increased traffic from ocean-going shipping but also from inland vessels.
