Rix plans orders around turbines
Hull based energy company, Rix, has increased its order for new vessels in a bid to make the most of the developing offshore windfarm sector off the East Yorkshire coast in the UK.
The company has invested £7.5m in its new business, Rix Sea Shuttle, which operates offshore windfarm vessels on the East Coast. Rix has upped its order of new ships with local company, Dunston Ship Repairs Limited, from three to five after plans were announced for Siemens to open a major wind turbine manufacturing plant in the area.
James Doyle, shipping director, Rix, said: “We are being reasonably cautious about this but we do see opportunities and want to make sure we have a critical mass of vehicles that allow us to do what we want to do.”
With the offshore energy industry set to boom in the Humber estuary on the East coast by the end of the decade, seizing the opportunity, the local business will use the new vessels to transport technicians to and from the offshore wind turbines.
Rix Sea Shuttle has also looked at the potential of developments elsewhere including the London Array in the Thames estuary.
