Scots Prepare Taiwan for Oil Spill
A delegation of high-ranking officials from the Government of Taiwan has spent two weeks in Scotland learning about the latest oil spill response and prevention techniques. The 28 senior personnel, including representatives of the Taiwanese coast guard service, the national parks agency and water suppliers, attended intensive training sessions hosted by Aberdeen based pollution control experts Briggs Environmental Services.
While Taiwan is not an oil producing nation, the area is rich in gas reserves and the island is surrounded by shipping lanes used by oil tankers. The government decided to improve readiness for an oil spill following an accident last year in which an oil slick contaminated the country’s shoreline.
Accompanied by three linguists who provided simultaneous translation of lectures by Briggs’ specialists, the delegation received the latest information on oil spill prevention, oil slick evaluation and tracking, boom deployment, oil recovery, safety management, the properties of oil and other aspects of response strategy.
