Seavision challenges students
The UK non profit organisation, Seavision, and education charity, EDT, have set up a new competition called Go4SET ‘My School is an Island’, to promote awareness and understanding of the maritime sector.
The competition, which launches this week at HMS Collingwood in Fareham, will see around 90 Year 8 school children from the south of the UK use their skills to compete in 15 teams to produce the best project which tackles the issues they would face if their school was an island.
Each team will have a mentor from a local company who can help them relate their studies to real world problems. Local companies providing mentors include AB Ports Southampton, Babcock, DP World Southampton, Royal Navy, Red Funnel and Raymarine.
Fiona Pankhurst, head of corporate marketing, Raymarine, told Maritime Journal: “The reason for this maritime themed curriculum linked project is to introduce maritime content into learning, and to demonstrate the modern face of the sector together with the range of skills needed in order to enjoy continued success.”
She added: “The maritime sector is technologically advanced with some particularly exciting growth areas such as offshore renewable energy and the charter/super yacht sector. This is an opportunity to actively contribute to shaping and growing the maritime profile within the UK.”
Schools involved are Bohunt, Horndean Technology College, City of Portsmouth Girls, Oaklands, Petersfield, Portsmouth Grammar, Quilley School of Engineering, Sandown Bay Academy, Springfield and Toynbee.
