Significant Ships of 2005

Like its sister publication, this 16th annual edition of Significant Ships continues the effective format of combining a concise description of each vessel with a comprehensive table of technical data together with a colour photograph and a full page of general arrangement plans for each of the 49 commercial designs covered in this volume.

Once again, Significant Ships has been compiled by John Lingwood MRINA, whose expert and readable text records valuable advances in international shipbuilding. Although most of the ships contained in this volume are ocean going container ships, cruise ships, VLCC and LPG tankers, LNG carriers, bulkers and the like, there are also some interesting vessels perhaps more central to the MJremit.

One such vessel is D’Artagnan, the self propelled mega cutter suction dredger built by IHC Holland Dredgers BV for the DEME Group’s French subsidiary SDI. Bristling with enough power to run a small city and with the latest cutting system from VOSTA LMG, D’Artagnan’s ability to cut through solid rock makes it the latest in a recent lineage of dredgers whose capabilities have expanded the boundaries of the possible for marine project planners.

Also coming out of the Netherlands last year was Dokter Wagemaker, a sophisticated ro-ro shuttle whose hull was built at Damen Shipyards Galatz in Romania before being completed in Gorinchem.

This innovative double ender is driven by four Rolls-Royce azimuthing thrusters selected for their considerable pulling power, which is required to counteract the high windage at docking areas in Den Helder on the northern Dutch mainland and at the offshore island of Texel.
