Trinity House honour for MJ founder

Peter Moth is presently Secretary of the UK Harbour Masters’ Association, managing director of the consultants Maritime Intelligence Ltd, and managing director of publishers Foreshore Books. He received the recognition for his professional and voluntary services both at sea and within the ports industry over a career that has extended for more than 40 years.

The title of ‘Younger Brother’ relates back to the early sixteenth century when Henry VIII tasked his “trewe and faithfull subjects, shipmen and mariners of this Our Realm of England” to establish a fraternity to look after the safety, training and welfare of British seafarers. Today, Younger Brethren have no formal roles in maritime matters although many give valuable assistance and advice on the Corporation of Trinity House’s charitable activities. Younger Brethren are not involved in Trinity House’s function as the General Lighthouse Authority for England and Wales.

Trinity House, which next year celebrates its 500^th anniversary of receiving a Royal Charter, comprises a Fraternity of around 320 Younger Brothers and a Corporate Board of ten Elder Brothers. To be eligible for consideration for admission, applicants should be a Master Mariner with at least one year’s command experience, or equivalent appropriate qualifications and service.

Commenting shortly after the swearing-in ceremony at the Trinity House headquarters on Tower Hill, Peter Moth said: “I am very proud to receive this honour and look forward to contributing to the unique authority of Trinity House in the maritime sector. To become part of an organisation that is about to celebrate 500 years of service to the British seafaring community is a huge privilege and I look forward to contributing to the future direction of such a venerable body.”
