Wärtsilä solution for Russian icebreakers

The vessels are bound for a Russian state-owned enterprise and will operate primarily in the Baltic Sea and in Arctic waters. Wärtsilä’s integrated power and automation systems will ensure the vessels run efficiently and safely in such severe weather conditions.

Aaron Bresnahan, vice president of sales, Wärtsilä Ship Power, said: “Icebreakers and other vessels that operate in harsh, arctic conditions are usually working a long way from port repair facilities, and for that reason reliability and operating efficiencies are essential.”

Each vessel will be equipped with four 12 cylinder Wärtsilä 32 engines which allow for easy maintenance and reliability. Wärtsilä’s Power Management System (PMS), Power Distribution System and Power Drive System will maximise the environmental and economic performance of the vessels.

The vessels are expected to be delivered in 2015 with a third icebreaker expected to be built within the same project, for which there is an option pending to supply similar equipment.
