Wärtsilä supply dual-fuel engines
Wärtsilä is to provide dual-fuel engines for two environmentally sustainable tugs being built for CNOOC Energy Technology and Services Limited (CETS) – the first in China to be fuelled liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The vessels are the first in a planned series and will provide environmental advantages as a result of operating on gas. Nitrogen oxide (NOx), CO2 and Sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions are all reduced when operating in gas mode. The engines also allow vessels to switch seamlessly between natural gas, light fuel oil (LFO), and heavy fuel oil (HFO), without losing any speed or power.
Aaron Bresnahan, vice president, Wärtsilä Ship Power Specials, said: “We are delighted to be co-operating with CNOOC in supplying the main engines for these gas fuelled tugs. It is a landmark project that is very much in line with the marine sector’s key targets of achieving greater sustainability with better fuel efficiency. We endorse CNOOC’s strategic move towards cleaner energy and the use of LNG as a marine fuel, which is precisely in line with Wärtsilä’s own strategy.”
CNOOC hope to achieve more clean energy in its operations with the 6500 bhp tugs which will run along China’s coastline.
The first of the tugs is expected to be delivered in June 2013.
