Dredging giant diversifies with offshore wind

The execution is on track and the scope for this contract includes procurement, construction and installation of the 27 foundations and turbines as well as the electrical infrastructure. The 62MW offshore windfarm will provide enough green power for approximately 30,000 households in the Redcar area.

Van Oord’s specialised Offshore Wind Projects division offers both EPC main contracting and construction services to the offshore wind industry. It is part of Van Oord’s strategy to play an important role in the worldwide offshore wind energy market and to contribute to CO2 emission reduction goals. The successful completion of the Princess Amalia Offshore Wind Park, the Belwind Phase I Offshore Wind Park and the Aeolus Project have proven Van Oord’s capability to act as a sustainable EPC contractor.

The Princess Amalia Offshore Wind Park in the Netherlands features 60 wind turbines producing some 400 GW hours per year, enough to supply 125,000 households. Van Oord carried out the design, procurement and installation works for the foundations, cables and offshore high voltage station.

The Belgian Offshore Wind Farm, Belwind Phase I, was completed in the record time of 15 months and will now provide 175,000 households with green energy. Van Oord as EPC contractor was responsible for the design, engineering, procurement and installation of the 55 foundations, the power cables and the complete electrical infrastructure and grid connection onshore for the 165MW offshore windfarm.

The Aeolus project involved the design, engineering, procurement and installation of two meteo masts in the North Sea. One is installed off the coast IJmuiden, the Netherlands. The second mast is located off the coast of Helgoland,Germany. The purpose of a meteo mast is to collect meteorological data to monitor offshore conditions, information which is essential to the successful development of offshore windparks.

In the UK, Van Oord’s role in the offshore wind market is diverse and expected grow in the future. Several scour protection works have been executed at Sheringham Shoal, Greater Gabbard and London Array. Van Oord’s Teesside contract is the first Balance of Plant project in the UK and other EPC projects are in the pipeline in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands.
