Nantucket wind farm moves closer

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) completed an aeronautical study on the wind farm, and found it wouldn’t interfere with local aircraft if constructed with certain mitigation conditions imposed.

The Cape Wind farm, comprised of up to 130 turbines, has had to run a gauntlet of opposition for more than a decade. The latest appeal ended up in the ruling that led to this FAA safety evaluation. Other critics argue that the turbines would have a negative impact on wildlife and ruin the scenery.

However, it seems that the problem may be more to do with the people who own the land nearby. Some are worried it will undermine the value of housing in the area. One of the most high profile opponents was the late Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy whose family home was at Hyannis Port. There have also been reports of opposition funded by the oil and coal industries.
