Powerful provision for Walney windfarm
ABB has supplied generator step up transformers (GSUs) for both phases of the Walney offshore windfarm in the East Irish Sea.
The recently opened Walney 1 and Walney 2 each consist of 51 wind turbines, each turbine generating 3.6 MW of electricity. ABB supplied two GSUs, rated 120 MVA, 132/33 kV for each of the Walneys. The GSUs are the essential links connecting power stations to transmission networks. The normally operate 24/7 at full load and must be able to withstand the extreme heat and accelerated aging caused by constant high electrical currents.
Other ABB equipment supplied for the project includes three 145 kV gas insulated switchgear units and the main transformer surge arresters.
Walney is operated by DONG energy, Scottish and Southern Energy, and a consortium of investment funds.
