Green Light for New Ferry Facilities
Work to develop facilities at Cairnryan for ferriesacross the Irish Sea is continuing, with Royal Haskoning taking a leading rolein the project. Once complete, the development will reduce the crossing timefor Stena Lines ferries and create improved facilities for P& Osoperation.
‘We are making good progress with the project, said Royal Haskoning spokesperson Richard Marks. ‘The planning and design have been completed, as have an environmental impact assessment and environmental statement. Tenderers have been pre-qualified and tenders have been received.’
The tenders have now been assessed and the project team are talking to the preferred contractors to finalise the decision about awarding contracts. Recently the Harbour Empowerment Order was signed allowing construction to commence.
“This is a significant project for the region,” said Marks. “It will cater for a potential growth in ferry traffic, providing an economic boost to the area. It will also see the transfer of ferry facilities from Stranraer, freeing up the town’s seafront to stimulate regeneration into a leisure and marine visitor attraction.”
