Heavenly Fenders for Port of Angels
Pier 400 is an all new facility built at the Port of Los Angeles in California USA. New berths and container areas are set to open, expanding on a first phase which was completed in August 2002. In total, Pier 400 adds six new berths which cater for vessels up to and including 230,000 tonnes displacement.
Client APM Terminals, part of the Maersk Group, and engineers from the Port of Los Angeles adopted a Trellex Fender Systems design using the same fender elements throughout Pier 400, with two different panel types depending on the nature of the vessels using a particular berth.
Trellex provided 68 fender systems for the 1,220m of berthing in Phase One and 71 systems for the 1,525m Phase Two.
The units provided achieved two key requirements. The fenders have a compact footprint which minimises the space needed for mounting. This allowed the size of the dock face to be reduced, with significant savings in the volume of concrete needed.
Also, part of Phase Two is used for the docking of both ships and container barges so the fendering needed to cope with either type of hull.
The solution was for Trellex to fabricate 47 of the 71 Phase Two fender panels to its ‘Type B’ design. These panels protect the dock structure against damage from barges by providing vertical coverage from the top of the deck right down to the waterline.
The chosen fenders were made up of pairs of Trellex MV1600 x 1100 fender elements faced with the engineered closed box fabricated steel Type B or shorter Type A panels.
