Marina build in demanding conditions

This floating marina will have 131 vessel berths at five separate quays. A special feature of the project is that the marina will have to endure the demanding local weather conditions.

Klaksvik is the second largest town on the Faroe Islands, located on one of the Northern islands. It is an important harbour town and the hub for tourism on the Northern islands. The small boat marina will boost the town’s position as a tourist centre.

Vileo Marinas will provide the Klaksvik small boat marina with five floating quays made from massive concrete elements. In addition, immobile waterfront structures will be included in the delivery. The structures must be durable because violent storms are common on the Faroe Islands. Christmas 2016, for example, local wind velocities exceeded 70m/s (156.5mph), while the lower limit for a hurricane force wind is considered to be 32m/s.

“The Faroe Islands have a very exceptional climate, and this makes our marina project extremely challenging. Hurricane-strength winds are frequently measured on the islands, and sometimes boats must be lifted onto dry land for the duration of the storms”, says CEO Mikael Hindsberg from Vileo Marinas.

The Klaksvik small boat marina was designed by the Henning Larsen Architects, an architectural firm of international renown. Their local Faroe Islands’ office is also responsible for implementing a major modernisation project for the Klaksvik town centre.

The contract price for the Klaksvik small boat marina is over half a million euros.
