Marine Works Preface Battersea Revamp

For many years the future of this iconic structure has been in doubt but the developers, Parkview International, have reportedly spent some £100m already on professional fees for architects, planners and lawyers.

The site will eventually house a mix of apartments, offices, galleries, hotels and other commercial and leisure spaces.

Over a 20 week period, Commercial Marine and Piling constructed four berthing dolphins, each with two raked piles and one vertical pile, alongside the new development, to be used as a temporary lay-by jetty for vessels waiting to load.

CMP have also refurbished the existing concrete jetty works, including the removal and replacement of redundant timber fenders, screens and ladders and the installation of a new fender system.

The company was responsible for fabrication of a steel pile link framework, used as a temporary structure through which to drive the piles, dismantling and removal of the old pipe carrier system and walkways below the jetty structure, and dredging around the jetty. The existing jetty houses two redundant Stothert and Pitt grab cranes which are believed to be listed structures that are due to remain on site as landmark features.

All the marine works were carried out by CMP using the jack-up barge Vibro, a material carrying barge, a small handling tug, a dory for safety cover, and impact hammers. The MST workboat Predator was also used as a safety boat. Additional work on the new pontoons was carried out by Land and Water Services.

CMP has been involved in all areas of the design and construction of marine works in the UK for 20 years. Notable recent contracts include the refurbishment of the fire damaged Southend Pier and refurbishment of historic masonry walls and culverts above and below the waterline in Portsmouth Naval Dockyard. The company undertook major demolition works at the King George V Docks in London and deployed their jack-up barge General Zee for specialist rock socketing in Holyhead.
