New Canal Boat Marina Planned in British Midlands
Preliminary details of a new canal boat marina at the junction of the Trent and Mersey and Shropshire Union canals with moorings for up to 150 boats have been released by PB Developments of Knutsford, Cheshire, in the UK.
The proposed development is part of a large scale residential development close to the centre of Middlewich. Outline planning approval is being sought for the development, and a planning decision is expected in September or October, and PB Developments is in ongoing discussions with British Waterways about the proposed development.
The need for a marina for narrow boats at the site has long been recognised. A combination of waterways, the Shropshire Union Canal (known as ‘The Shroppie’) runs between Ellesmere Port and Autherley Junction, near Wolverhampton.
To the north, it is broad canal running through Chester and the Cheshire Plain, while, further south, it is a narrow canal with wooded cuttings and high embankments with views of the Wrekin. It links up with the Llangollen Canal and, via the Middlewich Branch, the Trent & Mersey Canal.
A spokesperson for PB Developments said he hoped engineering work for the new marina would start next year, and said the new marina should be open for business from late 2003 or early 2004 onwards.
