Seawork Exhibitor Enables Marina Expansion

The marina can accommodate vessels up to 30m in length and 80 tons.

In order to expand mooring spaces, more toilet and shower facilities were needed but building space was limited and planning consent for permanent buildings was going to be difficult to obtain. The marina is only 50m from the Stena Line ferry terminal servicing the high speed ferry from Holyhead.

Hal Bleakley, a director of Dun Laoghaire Marina, came up with the idea of designing and building a floating structure which looked like a barge and thus fitted well with its surroundings into which the required services could be installed.

Working closely with specialist alloy boat builders Sea Otter, marine sanitation system specialists and Seawork exhibitor LeeSan assisted with the design and construction of the holding tanks, plumbing, dual pump system and the appropriate toilets and ancillary equipment. LeeSan came up with a design in which the system will continue to function even in the event of a pump breakdown and can be repaired without ever going offline. Leesan is also responsible for designing and installing the pipe work which will carry the waste from the new unit to the main sewer some 250m away.

The facilities barge will be centrally located within easy walking distance of berths and will blend into the marina surroundings. There are four toilets each fior man and women, with a shower and hand basins.
