Archer Class benefits from re-power programme
ZF gearboxes and controls are specified alongside CAT engines in a re-power programme for the British Royal Navys Archer Class P2000 patrol vessels.
They form part of a propulsion package supplied by Finning Power Systems to Holyhead Marine Services and UK Docks Marine Services, the service providers fulfilling the re-power contract.
The primary role of P2000 vessels in peacetime is that of coastal training craft for officer training and seamanship. They are currently being upgraded to the latest specification with a pair of CAT C18 873hp diesel engines coupled to ZF Marine 2000 V reverse reduction gearboxes, with the combination controlled by the ZF 9000 Series ClearCommand system.
The first vessel to benefit from the propulsion improvements is HMS Biter (P270), already back in service following successful sea trials. Its primary tasking is the support of Manchester and Salford Universities’ Royal Naval Unit, taking students to sea for weekends in the Irish Sea and for extended periods in UK and foreign waters. Other tasking includes supporting Royal Navy exercises and training, and working with youth groups and cadets. The next three vessels to be re-powered will be HMS Explorer, HMS Express and HMS Ranger, and there is the opportunity for further Archer Class vessels to be repowered following completion of these first four P2000s.
The ZF 2000 V is a compact, lightweight, space-saving gearbox design with input and output on the same side of the transmission. Hydraulic clutches are used on both the input and reverse shafts, and the hydraulic gearshift is electrically actuated. It is compatible with all types of engines and propulsion systems, including waterjets and surface-piercing propellers.
The ZF 9000 Series ClearCommand system provides reliable and responsive single lever control of the engines and gearboxes via the electronically actuated throttles and gearshift. Benefits include speed/shift sequence protection, a safety feature that allows shifting from full ahead to full astern in a single motion without causing damage to the driveline.
