Bad Vibes On the Run at seawork2004
Southern Cross Marine Ltd , the UK distributor for Australian manufacturers Poly Flex , will have that companys new Resilient Deck Support System (RDSS) and a full range of engine mounts and flexible damper/ couplings displayed on Stand 113 at seawork2004 .
The Poly Flex RDSS was designed in response to vibrations transmitted from the structure of the vessel into the deck or superstructure that are generated by the air column within the deck supports.
The design concept came from studying the levels of vibration in decks and superstructures over many years and was developed into a product after supplying mounting isolator ends into a vessel on Australia’s Gold Coast.
The founder and managing director of Poly Flex, Brian Gagen, is a trained musician who did work on the theory of amplification of an air column such as in a wind instrument (support tube) and a sounding board such as a violin (deck).
A vibration that finds the natural frequency of a structure needs to be tuned out to reduce the problem and with the RDSS method of adjusting the ball and resilient socket end, the deck or superstructure can be tensioned. The resulting change to the vibration harmonies is remarkable. Should the deck supports be in very demanding and sensitive areas, the tube can be injected with expanding foam to further reduce air space in the tube prior to fitting the ball ends.
Meanwhile back in Brisbane, Poly Flex has achieved DNV Type Approval for their range of couplings and engine mounts after extensive testing, inspection and reporting procedures.
