Cat launches new workboat engine at SMM

Topping the bill for Caterpillar Marine Power Systems at SMM was the new C175-16 marine propulsion engine, offering the size, power and rpm to drive new, more profitable vessel designs for all segments of the marine industry.

The latest in a line of high performance engines designed to meet EPA Tier 3 and IMO Tier II emissions requirements, the C175-16 is rated at 2,001 – 2,168 bkW @ 1,600 rpm. The new propulsion engine extends Caterpillar Marine’s high speed engine power range beyond the company’s 3616C-HD engine.

The 84.67 litre displacement C175-16 engine meets EPA Tier 3 marine engine emissions requirements and is well suited for offshore support vessel, tug, and workboat applications. Technology advances and updates are intended to ensure minimal environmental impact.

The engine has a bore of 175mm and a stroke of 220mm and features turbocharged and aftercooled aspiration; an MCS approved monitoring, alarm, and protection system; cross-flow head design, and a simplified electrical system. It offers 13% more power capability in the A and B duty cycle propulsion ratings with minimum footprint changes.

The C175-16 utilises proven ACERT Technology, featuring optimized turbocharging and aftercooling to provide reliable maximum power output. The Cat common rail fuel system enables low emissions at all levels and requires no after-treatment to comply with regulations. In addition to a 1,000 hour oil change interval, thermo-laminated heat shields save time and money during service.
