Cummins launches QSK50 at NorShipping
Cummins Inc showcased its EPA Tier 2 certified and IMO Tier II compliant Quantum System 50 litre engine at the NorShipping 2009 exhibition in Oslo last month, marking the first time a QSK50 was publicly exhibited in Scandinavia. Cummins also highlighted C Command, its modular vessel monitoring system designed specifically for the challenges of marine applications.
With ratings from 1,193kW to 1,342kW (1,600 to 1,800bhp), the QSK50 is well suited for high hour demanding applications such as offshore support, towing, cargo and passenger transport, as well as ship’s service power.
The Quantum System product line utilizes Cummins patented Modular Common Rail (MCRS) fuel system, an advanced in-cylinder solution, to meet U.S. EPA Tier 2, European Union Stage IIIA and IMO Tier II emissions regulations.
A recent European installation is onboard the inland cargo vessel ‘Mon Desir’, which transports coal along the river system from the German Ruhrgebiet.
The 135m long hull of the ship was built near the mouth of the Volga River in the JSC 3d International Shipyard at Astrakan in Russia and the vessel was completed at the TeamCo Shipyard in Heuden the Netherlands. The main engines in this vessel’s immaculate engine room are a pair of Cummins QSK50-M machines, each producing 1,700hp at 1,800 rpm. The engines are EU Stage IIIa and EPA Tier 2 compliant.
Although the Mon Desir is employed in the transport of coal, the 14.2m wide hull, with its 4m moulded depth, also has the potential to carry other cargos, including the short sea shipping of containers.
Available exclusively on Cummins QSK19, 38, 50 and 60 engine models, C Command instrument panels enable vessel operators to protect and enhance engine operations and manage operating costs by logging critical operating parameters such as engine load, duty cycle, speed and fuel consumption, while providing diagnostic and prognostic capabilities.
