Doosans do nicely for Nigerian tug
Engine, gearbox and generator specialist WaterMota has delivered main engines, generators, propulsion drives and associated equipment for a new 16m tug under construction for the Nigerian Navy in Nigeria’s Naval Shipyard in Port Harcourt.
WaterMota is exclusive UK and Ireland distributor for Doosan, D-I, JMP and WhisperPower and has supplied a pair of Doosan V180TIH turbo charged and intercooled 18 litre heavy duty marine propulsion diesel engines, each developing 600 bhp (441 kW) @ 1,800 rpm.
The engines will be driving through D-I reversing gearboxes with 4.52:1 reduction ratio and 1,500mm diameter four bladed Kort Propulsion propellers and nozzles. The tailshafts, sterntubes, propellers and nozzles are included in the WaterMota supply together with batteries, exhaust systems, controls, instrument panels and all engine room installation accessories.
Other equipment supplied by the company includes D-I twin rudder power steering system, JMP sea water pumps and a 12 kW WhisperPower generating set, again with all installation accessories. The consignment was packed into a 40 ft container at WaterMota works before being shipped to Nigeria.
Mike Beacham, WaterMota MD, has many years of experience in the Nigerian market with previous employers, but said this was the first order WaterMota has supplied to the Nigerian Navy.
He said: “The vessel represents a major investment for the Nigerian Navy and a substantial order for WaterMota. The Navy specifically requested Doosan engines as they are very well liked and popular for their robustness and simplicity together with their competitive price.”
The 92 ton displacement tug will have a length of 16.56m, beam of 5.54m, a 2.27m draught and a top speed of around 11 knots with a bollard pull of 16 tonnes. The vessel will be suitable for towing, pushing, line handling and general assistance. It is due to be launched later this year.
