Generator men move on electric propulsion

Now some of the mainstream manufacturers of generators are using their electrical expertise to enter.

American company Northern Lights, which also offers the Lugger range of propulsion diesel engines as well as generators, has introduced its hybrid system. This comprises a generator/motor that fits between the engine gearbox and the propeller shaft or directly to the engine flange. Combined with a suitable battery bank and control system this unit can provide all the auxiliary power required on board such as for domestic use and for thrusters and winches and it can also be used for propulsion.

This hybrid system from Northern Lights makes it one of the few companies offering a complete package from one manufacturer, which will have advantages from a compatibility point of view. The Lugger diesels range up to 525 hp so this system is suitable for a wide range of motor yachts and could also be used in the commercial and fishing sectors.

German generator manufacturer Fischer Panda has adopted a different route for electric propulsion with a range of electric motors and sail drive units added to its portfolio. These are mainly aimed at the lower power segment of the market with the power of a single unit up to 10kW. This makes these electric drive systems suitable mainly as auxiliary power on sailboats or for installations on inland waterway vessels. There are a variety of installation options including inboard electric motors connected to a conventional shaft and propeller system, fixed sail drive type systems, steerable sail drive systems and the latest development, a hybrid system.

The fact that these major generator manufacturers are entering the electric propulsion market suggests that electric propulsion is gaining momentum. Several builders are now offering hybrid and electric propulsions systems as an option for their craft and with the backing of these generator manufacturers there will be more confidence in this emerging technology.
