Ecospeed coating goes on and on
During the recent drydocking of the oil spill response vessel owned by the Port Authority of Rotterdam, an inspection revealed that the Ecospeed coating on its underwater hull was in excellent condition.
This was despite that the vessel had been laying idle for the last two years and a thick layer of fouling had accumulated as a result. The ship was coated with Ecospeed during its newbuild phase and since its delivery in 2007 it has had to be operated on only a few occasions. This led to the buildup of a thick layer of barnacles and mussels on the hull, which is inevitable on a ship in this situation no matter how it is painted.
With a traditional coating, this type of vessel would need to dock for two or three weeks every year and receive a full repaint. The Ecospeed coating on The Rotterdam boat was revealed to still be in excellent condition after high pressure washing. This cleaning procedure was made extremely easy by the coating’s ability to prevent fouling penetration. The process can be repeated whenever needed during the remainder of the vessel’s lifespan without causing damage to or deterioration of the Ecospeed coating.
Despite the aggressive nature of the fouling, no rust or damage to the steel was present on the underwater hull and only a minor touch-up was needed to the vessel’s floater due to severe mechanical impact.
Ecospeed is well suited for often stationary ships such as oil spill response vessels. An impermeable barrier is created which gives excellent and durable anti-corrosive properties and also protects the underwater hull against mechanical damage.
