Tide and Weather Monitoring Lifts Dovers Soul
With 50,000 ferry movements and over 16 million passengers handled last year, the UKs Port of Dover is one of the busiest ferry ports in the world. Cruise liners, cargo ships and the small craft populating a 400 berth marina add to the high level of activity.
All will benefit from a new tide and weather monitoring system which will further enhance the efficiency of shipping movements into and out of the port.
The system, supplied by Seatronics Ltd, has a UHF telemetry link which integrates it with Dover Harbour’s Local Area Network (LAN) to ensure that up to date tide and weather information is available throughout the harbour, with ferries’ masters among the recipients.
Valeport Ltd worked with Seatronics and the Marine Operations and IT Departments of Dover Harbour Board to design, manufacture and install the tide and weather monitoring system. It has the Valeport MIDAS 400 multi-parameter logger which is fed by sensors for wind speed and direction, air pressure, air temperature and precipitation.
There are two tide height and sea temperature sensors to give built-in redundancy.
