Consortium wins funding for super-efficient boat
A consortium formed by Optima Electric Yachts CEO David Kendall, on the south coast of England, will work on an ‘Ultra-Efficient Electric Boat’ with funding from the 4th round of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC-4), which is funded by the Department of Transport.
The consortium consists of:
- · Seabird Technologies, developers of the foiling electric race boat E1 series
- · Teignbridge Propellers, propulsion designer and manufacturer
- · Edwards & Renouf, who has developed a biocide-free marine coating
- · Rob Watson, founder of On The Layline Ltd, who will be assisting with project management.
Teignbridge, which won funding in the first round of the CMDC for propeller design and investigating the use of composite materials for propellers, is developing a high-efficiency propeller deign suitable for electric propulsion systems.
The funding will allow the consortium as a whole to ‘test and develop further advancements in sustainability in the form of ultra-efficient propellor technology, low-friction clean antifoul coatings and in foil assistance to achieve even greater efficiencies for the electric vessel industry’, Teignbridge says.
David Kendall, Optima’s CEO “The increased efficiencies developed during the project will keep us ahead of our competitors in terms of energy efficiency and range and enable our 13m electric vessels to be ready for production in 2025,” said Kendall.
