Final tug joins ‘greenest tug fleet’ in the world

HaiSea Marine, a joint venture between shipyard owner and builder Seaspan and the indigenous Haisla Nation in Kitimat, British Columbia, will operate the tugs.

Two of them are large LNG-fuelled RAstar 4000-DF escort tugs with 100 tonnes bollard pull, and these will escort LNG carriers from a production facility in the Douglas Channel to port, 159nm away.

At port, operations will be taken over by the other three tugs, which are smaller, fully electric vessels also under the Robert Allan design – the ElectRA 2801, 2802 and 2803.

The two LNG-fuelled tugs were named HaiSea Kermode and Warrior at the launch in Turkey in March 2023, which Maritime Journal editor Debbie Mason attended.

The three electric tugs were launched at the same time and named Haisea Wamis, Wee’git and Brave, also following the trend of giving them local names.
