Hybrid workboat partnership for Californian ocean sampling

The 19.2-metre hybrid-electric catamaran will support the Orange County Sanitation District’s (OC San) Ocean Monitoring Program, ensuring safe waters for marine life, swimming and fishing.

Monitoring wastewater

Expected to launch in 2027, the workboat will perform 90 ocean sampling missions annually, contributing to OC San’s 40-year mission of monitoring wastewater impacts.

ABB’s extensive expertise in hybrid-electric systems will enhance the vessel’s performance, offering reduced emissions and optimised energy use.

The hybrid-electric propulsion system will power the vessel, aligning with California’s strict zero-emission mandates, requiring at least 30% of annual energy from zero-emission sources.

Drew Orvieto, head of sales for ABB Marine Systems in the US, highlighted the broader significance of the collaboration.

“Our hybrid-electric propulsion technology is ideal for environmental monitoring and research vessels. This project underscores our commitment to supporting maritime decarbonisation,” he said.

He added that the innovative hybrid workboat will play a vital role in sustainable ocean sampling, setting a benchmark for future hydrographic survey and environmental monitoring vessels.
