Kongsberg Maritime wins four-tug tech contract

Kongsberg Maritime’s scope covers the full electrical and automation architecture, including DC and AC switchboards, permanent magnet propulsion motors and shore charging equipment. Each tug will be powered primarily by a 4.8MWh battery pack. Centralised automation and control will be delivered via the K-Chief system and K-Chief PMS, integrating propulsion and energy management with single-mode switching capability.

Each vessel will be fitted with two US L-Drive azimuth thrusters with 2.8-metre nozzles, driven by 2,000kW permanent magnet motors and managed through the AquaPilot thruster control system. Kongsberg Maritime will also supply a hydraulic escort winch, two capstans and two chain stoppers per vessel.

The contract supports Svitzer’s objective of deploying electric tugs across its global fleet.
