Dutch engine manufacturer, Neander Shark, is in the process of developing a modern diesel outboard motor - a prototype of which was on show at SMM this year.
The company began designing the motor after Yanmar stopped the production of its diesel outboard motor, the Yanmar D27. Its aim was to develop a motor which is optimum in weight, performance and fuel consumption whilst proving durable and reliable.
Neander Shark’s new motor is a full aluminium two cylinder turbo diesel with vommon rail fuel injection, two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. Its cylinders make it compact but highly efficient. It also features a double crankshaft which neutralises the inertial forces and torque to ensure vibration free running.
The 55hp motor, aims to offer the maritime industry a diesel powered outboard engine to replace petrol and significantly reduce operational costs.
To date, the company has built three prototype engines and is in the process of developing the motors and its components for the start of production, which is expected to begin in about 18 months.
