PGS seismic venture off Irish coast – by David Goodfellow
Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS) of Oslo, which has 41 offices in over 25 countries, is presently completing the acquisition of up to 300 sq/km of 3D seismic data across the Slyne Basin region 60km off the west coast of Ireland on behalf of San Leon Energy, holders of a 50% offshore stake in the region.
The survey, in depths of between 200m and 500m, is being provided by the Norwegian company under a seismic services agreement for work in the Atlantic Basin up to a reported value of $50m. It is being conducted aboard one of the company’s 16 seismic survey vessels, Ramform Vanguard, and is due for completion this month. According to Oisin Fanning, San Leon Energy’s chairman, the Atlantic margin area has an offshore resource potential comparable to that of the North Sea some 40 years ago.
In a separate development, PGS says it has signed a collaborative agreement with Shell for joint development of a lower cost ultra-high channel count fibre-optic seismic sensing system. It will be aimed at providing enhanced resolution and imaging as a basis for improved exploration decision making.
