PODCAST: Sit-down with Volvo Penta CEO and Marine president

There’s never any let-up with marine systems engineering, especially nowadays, when there are arguably more threats to the industry than ever before with incoming environmental penalties and restrictions.

No one can afford not to prepare for the future, despite not knowing what it is.

At the launch of Volvo Penta’s upgraded integrated IPS platform in new crew transfer vessel Impresser, by Northern Offshore Services, I sat down with CEO Anna Müller and Marine president Johan Linden to discuss this and other issues.

Among the concerns facing the commercial marine industry, nearly all of them to do with environmental laws and restrictions, Volvo Penta is going full steam ahead with its engine innovation, investment and partnerships to try and navigate through the unknowns.

With alternative fuels, for example, no one really knows which way the industry is going to go – so Volvo Penta is trying to future proof and accommodate a range of options.

Vessel size will also be an issue as offshore wind farms move further and further out to sea – something Volvo Penta must also address with its new systems, not dumping diesel altogether (few people really believe that’s going to be possible for a long time to come), but at least burning less of it.
