A new report from Netherlands based shipping consultancy Dynamar says the shortsea feeder trade is an important part of an integral port network. Efficient feeder links act as a catalyst to the growth of containerisation and hence play an important role in growing business volumes. Transhipment cargo, in addition to hinterland cargo, is attractive to mainline carriers and thus promotes port use overall.

Rather than setting rules to be abided by passively, the regulations force users to think actively about safety and conduct their own risk assessment for any situation requiring access.
