Ride control fore and aft
The Ride Control System (RCS) from UK company Naiad Dynamics combines a device similar to a trim tab, called an Interceptor at the transom and a T-Foil mounted forward. The company believes that it is a great contributor to solving the problem of allowing comfortable but rapid windfarm transfers.
Installed on each hull of a typical windfarm transfer catamaran, the lifting devices are continuously being positioned to provide forces that will counter the undesirable motions of the vessel. The T-Foils and Interceptors are moved by hydraulic actuators to positions dictated by the networked controller. The controller obtains the Catamaran motion data from a dedicated set of sensors that measure pitch and roll.
Reductions in motions of up to 80% in pitch and 50% in roll and reductions in vertical acceleration at the forward perpendicular of 60% are achievable according to Naiad. The system also provides automatic control of the running trim and heel. The operator enters the trim value that provides the best speed and the RCS will maintain this value while dynamically reducing the pitching and rolling. The stated aim of the RCS system is to save fuel and reduce operator and machinery fatigue.
Naiad report that the RCS system is installed on two of Turbine Transfers’ vessels, one being Cwmbran Bay and the other currently in build at Neptune Shipyard.
