Russia to boost GLONASS positioning system – by David Goodfellow
Russia will launch seven more satellites for its Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) by the end of this year so as to provide truly global coverage, according to Prime Minister Vladimir Putin at a recent conference in Moscow.
Comparable to the the US GPS network, the Russian version will comprise 27-28 satellites, with 18 providing coverage of entire national territory while the remainder will help provide navigation and positioning services worldwide. GLONASS presently comprises 23 satellites, including 21 in use and two under technical maintenance. A rouble equivalent of $220m has been allocated for its development.
