Subsea technology company SMD and software company Beam will install new technology on SMD’s vehicle that they say will allow it to operate in harsher, deeper environments. 

Beam’s subsea perception system SubSLAM, which runs on Pathfinder software, will be installed on SMD’s Quantum EV.

The combination of localisation, AI and mapping technology with the EV’s performance in high currents, means the efficiency of offshore wind farm maintenance will be improved, the firms say.

“We are working with Beam, a company aligned with our focus and goals,” said SMD’s ROV sales and business development manager, John McCann.

“SubSLAM’s 3D mapping, data collection, and image capture capabilities mark progress towards autonomous ROV operations. When paired with a vehicle like Quantum EV, these functions can operate in deeper waters.”

“This work reflects our effort to use technology to enhance services and advance renewable energy,” said Simon Adams, programme director at Beam. “Autonomous vehicles for inspections reduce costs and increase efficiency. These tasks also need fewer personnel, addressing workforce shortages in the industry.

“With Quantum EV’s stability and position-keeping in high currents, Pathfinder and SubSLAM can operate in harsher conditions, extending services to more wind farms.”

Almost a year ago, SMD sold its first Quantum EV to civils giant Jan De Nul.

The Quantum EV is deployed on Jan De Nul’s extra large Fleeming Jenkin cable layer, a 200-metre giant capable of carrying carousels weighing 28,000 tonnes.
