Trans-Atlantic mapping survey

The first trans-Atlantic mapping survey to be carried out under a €70m cooperative research programme jointly convened by the EU, Canada and the US as part of Horizon 2020, the largest-ever EU research and innovation project, is currently being completed by a multi-national team of ocean survey experts aboard the Irish Marine Institute’s research vessel, Celtic Explorer.

Sailing between St John’s, Newfoundland in Canada and Galway, Ireland, the vessel is expected to complete the month-long venture across the North Atlantic this June. It is the first of a series of projects under an Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance between the EU, Canada and the US as part of a mission to better understand the North Atlantic Ocean while promoting the sustainable management of its resources.
