Trials Mirth at Twelve Quays Berth
The Port of Liverpools Twelve Quays River Terminal for Irish Sea ro-ro ferries handled its first ship last month when berthing trials by NorseMerchant Ferries 21,500gt vessel Lagan Viking were successfully completed.
More berthing and undocking exercises have been underway at the £25m terminal in preparation for the first commercial sailing this month.
In a three hour exercise, the Lagan Viking berthed three times at the northern end of the floating landing stage which when fully operational will be able to simultaneously accommodate two of NorseMerchant’s superferries.
Similar exercises in different weather conditions, in preparation for the commercial launch, follow months of detailed planning and simulator training.
NorseMerchant plans to transfer its Belfast service from its in-dock terminal at Liverpool’s Brocklebank Dock, with the Dublin service moving across to Twelve Quays from Canada Dock later in the summer.
Switching the two services from the Port’s enclosed docks onto the new river berth is expected to reduce voyage times between Liverpool and Ireland by 90 minutes.
