​ A new lease of life for a historic deep-sea fishing vessel

Stubnitz, once part of the GDR’s deep-sea fishing fleet, is set to receive its twelfth classification after the repairs, allowing it to sail for another five years.

“We are delighted to use our expertise in the repair sector to help maintain the former fishing vessel and today’s cultural ship in operational condition,” said Jan Tebbe-Simmendinger, managing director of Strela Shiprepair Yard.

Conservation project

Launched at the Volkswerft shipyard in 1964, the Stubnitz holds a significant place in maritime history. 

Operated by Denkmal und Kulturschiff Stubnitz, the 80-metre vessel has now traveled from its home port in Hamburg to Stralsund for the work.

At Strela Shiprepair Yard, located in the Volkswerft Maritime Industrial and Commercial Park, the ship will undergo conservation work, overhaul of the controllable pitch propeller system and maintenance of cranes and anchor chains.

Following the shipyard period, the Stubnitz will move to Stralsund’s city harbour where residents and visitors will be able to explore the ship’s history, enjoy catering services and attend events on board.

Since the beginning of 2024, Strela Shiprepair Yard has docked 24 ships, continuing its successful trend from the previous year.

Founded in April 2022, the yard has quickly become one of the largest shipyards on the German coast, employing 48 people and boasting significant repair capacities.
