Robotic humanoids join human welding crews

Fincantieri and Generative Bionics have teamed up on a four-year partnership to develop and deploy a robot designed to operate alongside workers in shipyards.

The initial focus is on creating a humanoid robot capable of supporting specific welding activities in naval manufacturing.

“Advanced robotics and artificial intelligence applied to industrial processes represent a strategic lever for the evolution of shipbuilding and for the competitiveness of the European industrial system,” commented Pierroberto Folgiero, chief executive and general manager of Fincantieri.

“The collaboration with Generative Bionics is part of the transformation journey we are undertaking to strengthen our operational excellence, enhance the work of our people, and address in a structured way the challenges related to growing production complexity and the availability of specialised skills.”

The robot will feature artificial intelligence, manipulation and perception systems, and vision capabilities to monitor welding seams. It will also include optimised locomotion to navigate complex shipyard environments.

Development and testing will take place at Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente shipyard, which will serve as the main industrial validation and certification site. Initial on-site tests are scheduled by the end of 2026 with operations expected within the first two years of the programme, followed by refinement, expansion and certification.

The initiative aligns with Fincantieri’s Industrial Plan and broader technological objectives, expanding the group’s robotics activities across manufacturing.
