£4 Million Marine Construction at Port of Plymouth
Associated British Ports (ABP) will invest over £ 4m in major construction works at Millbay Docks at its Port of Plymouth in preparation for the arrival of Brittany Ferries’ new superferry Pont Aven , which will enter service in April of next year.
The expenditure will fund marine works to cater for the safe year-round navigation of Pont Aven into Millbay Docks.
The new vessel will be the largest in Brittany Ferries’ fleet and 20m longer than the longest ferry currently using the port.
The marine works will include the construction of three new berthing dolphins and dredging to improve port access and ease manoeuvring onto the berth.
ABP will simultaneously invest in the port’s landside operations by expanding the current passenger and freight vehicle reception area, rationalising vehicle flows and improving both security and customs facilities.
The investment extends a successful partnership between ABP and Brittany Ferries for a further 15 years and secures the future of Plymouth as an established ferry port. It follows ABP’s recent sale of 10 hectares of land and water at Millbay Docks to the South-West Regional Development Agency and English Partnerships, the national regeneration agency.
The expected property development of the area will complement the expanding cruise and ferry terminus.
Work is due to start in the autumn following completion of the statutory consent process.
Pont Aven will replace Val de Loire on the twice weekly Plymouth to Santander service.
