Fast track training for power skippers
Scotland’s Seatrek Training is launching a fast track programme which will enable commercial operators the opportunity to develop employees in stages.
The training has been divided into modules, enabling trainees to start at the beginning and work their way through to Yachtmaster in one go or opt for individual modules depending on needs. The whole programme takes approximately 13 weeks to complete and Seatrek will be running two in 2013 from its base at Kip Marina on the River Clyde.
On completion there is an opportunity for students to go forward for the Masters qualifications although Seatrek stresses that experience in posts enhances the development of skippers and strongly recommends this prior to applying for the Masters ticket.
Module 1 Powerboat/Small Workboat Skipper is well suited for those new skippers who are operating a small workboat. This will allow skippers to operate a vessel up to 24m from a safe departure point up to three miles in daylight hours only.
A year’s experience in post is required prior to applying for the commercial ticket. Once trainees have this, they can add on their sea survival and first aid qualification and their PPR (Professional Practices and Responsibilities) can be applied for online at any time. The five day package includes Powerboat Level 2, essential navigation and marine radio.
Module 2 is Novices – Day Skipper/Watchkeeper, Module 3 is day Skipper – Yachtmaster Coastal, and Module 4 is Yachtmaster Offshore.
