Bent Shaft Trucked for Repair

A minor shaft deflection had been observed on board and the vessel operator, Reederei Jungerhans Haren of Ems in Germany, decided to have the shaft trucked from the Brink BV Shiprepair Yard in Holland to MAN B&W’s facility at Frederikshavn in Denmark in conjunction with the vessel’s 10 year docking, class survey, overhaul and repair.

The shaft was cold straightened in a hydraulic press. Final grinding of the coupling flange end and re-calculation of the push-up dimension for the coupling muff were also carried out, all within three days. The work was approved by both Reederei Jungerhans and Germanischer Lloyd.

Class approved cold straightening of bent shafts has become more and more popular due to clear time and cost advantages compared to procuring a new propeller shaft.

If required the shafts can be magnafluxed for cracks and fissures. The hydraulic press at the MAN B&W facility in Denmark can also cold straighten rudder stocks as well as other shaft types up to the 500 mm range.
