The challenges and opportunities for sustainable ‘blue’ economy growth in the Black Sea will be a major focus at the European Maritime Day (EMD) conference.

The European Maritime Day (EMD) conference will take place in Burgas, Bulgaria

Leaders from the European Union, national governments, international organisations and NGOs will take part in a debate on the ‘Big Bang Black Sea’ on the first day of the conference, with contributions from experts including Michael Christides, Secretary General, Organisation of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation; Abdellah Srour, executive secretary of General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean; and Sigi Gruber, European Commission, DG Research & Innovation, head of unit, Marine Resources.

The second day will include a session looking at the latest on European funds post-2020. It aims to provide an indication on the expected future funding landscape for fisheries and blue growth as well as maritime research and innovation.

Delegates at the event, due to take place in Burgas, Bulgaria, from 31 May to 1 June, will also be able to attend DG MARE information sessions on measuring the EU blue economy, turning marine litter into a sustainable business and financing strategic cooperation for blue growth.

In total, there will be 18 stakeholders workshops covering a wide range of topical themes including aquaculture and the blue bio-economy; marine litter; digitalisation and big data; marine research; innovation; ports; maritime security; spatial planning; offshore energy; and ocean literacy.
