Bomb disposal event at Greater Gabbard
Bomb disposal experts Ramora UK have successfully and safely disposed of a mine that had been located close to the Greater Gabbard Windfarm off the coast of Suffolk.
The operation involved the use of a subsea ROV and was undertaken by a specialist team of maritime bomb disposal experts from Ramora UK. The mine, dating back to World War II, is the fifteenth such item of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) that the company has dealt with on the Greater Gabbard site.
The windfarm, which has been fully operational since 2012, is owned jointly by SSE and RWE Npower Renewables and comprises 140 wind turbines with the capacity to generate 500MW of electricity.
Ramora UK’s managing director David Welch said: “The offshore renewable energy sector has become a key market for us, dealing with UXO. We are delighted that once again we have been able to demonstrate our ability to dispose of such items safely and professionally.”
